Sorry für mein german Instructions for updating Olympus camera firmware. The following instructions apply to the following cameras ONLY. C-3040, C-3020, C-4000, C-4040, C-5050, C-700, C-730, C-740, C-750 These instructions are provided for use AT YOUR OWN RISK. If an error occurs during the procedure and the camera is left inoperable it must be returned to an authorized Olympus service center at your expense. Requirments – – Extra media card (SmartMedia or xD Picture Card depending on camera model). – Media reader/writer (optional) – AC adapter or fresh batteries Warning: Power the camera with an AC adapter (recommended) or fresh batteries. If power is lost during the update operation the camera may be left inoperable and will need to be returned to service to be repaired. 1. Prepare a clean media card by performing a format operation in the camera. See your cameraâs reference manual for instructions on formatting a media card. 2. If you do not have a card reader/writer you will need to use the camera as a reader/writer to prepare the media card. The camera must not be in PC mode for these operations. To turn off PC mode follow these instructions. a. Unplug the USB cable. b. Set the mode dial to A/S/M (or M on cameras with separate exposure settings). c. Open the media door and turn on the camera. d. Press and hold the OK/Menu and LCD/Quick View buttons for approximately 3 sec. The camera will beep and the Camera Control Menu will appear. e. Depending on the camera model choose OFF or Storage and press OK. f. Close the media door. g. Plug in the USB cable. 3. Create a folder at the root level of the media card called âfirmwareâ. 4. Unzip the firmware file for your camera and rename the .bin file to âfirmware.binâ. 5. Copy the firmware.bin file to the âfirmwareâ folder on the media card. 6. If you used a card reader/writer for steps 3-5 remove the card and insert it in the camera. If you used the camera then unplug the USB cable. 7. Turn off the camera. 8. Set the mode dial to the âplaybackâ mode. 9. Turn on the camera. When the camera completes the power on sequence a message will be displayed in the LCD showing the current firmware level and a Yes/No selection. 10. Using the arrow keys select âYesâ and press the OK key. The LCD will display âexchangingâ. 11. When the camera is finished updating the firmware the LCD will show a message giving the new firmware version. 12. Turn off the camera and remove the media card. 13. The camera is now updated. 14. Set the camera to PC mode. Hi !!! Firmware 80b Interessen Bitte Rechtzeitig informieren Nur Für Olympus C-5060WZ Zitat: I am reproducing a recent posting from Mr. George Sinesios on Olympus 405060 forum, which I found VERY interesting mainly because he appreciated an improve in low light performance as well as in focus behavior. Hey, Barry…Would that be the end of our nightmares??! QUOTTING: 1) Using the external FL-50 flash unit, I am easily able to over-light a 25’x16′ room – before, no matter what I did, the FL-50 flash just seemed like a very expensive way to have bounce flash capability and only provided the same quality“ of light as the built-in flash did. This is definitely an upgrade for me because I can now use the full power of the external flash at the cost of having to watch the histogram carefully to see I’m not using too much power! The downside is that if the built-in wide angle diffuser is used on the FL-50 the camera seems to ALWAYS overexpose (sometimes even with the flash compensation set to -3EV on the FL-50). This is definitely a bug in the firmware as this was not an issue before. However since I am now aware of what makes the camera over-expose (flipping down the wide angle diffuser) I can use this to my advantage when I want to really light up a shot! I’m un-decided if I want Olympus to fix this bug! ;^) (BTW For anyone who is considering getting an Olympus external flash (and I highly recommend it for maximum image quality) also consider getting the TTL flash cable (I use the FL-CB05 with the FL-50/C5060wz combo) as the images that are attainable are nearly impossible to get with „available light“ or post PS work on the file(s). the only thing to watch out for is that the flash cable (at least two different FL-CB05’s on two different 5060’s) does not communicate in TTL Auto mode with the camera unless the connector is pressed down onto the camera’s hot shoe (with the flash ring loose)! The store’s Olympus reps are looking into this problem now. However I am working around this problem for now by using elastics to hold the rear of the cable tight to the hot shoe and have simply astounding results with this combination – especially but not exclusively in macro or super macro modes.) 2) Focussing has improved – this is hard to judge „how much“ because I don’t have a pre-80b version to play with but it seems subjectively faster and much improved especially in spot focus mode. I am now fairly confident that what I wanted to be in focus really is in focus! I would guess that Olympus added a few extra steps (or positions) in it’s focussing algorithm and this has definitely helped get shots that are impossibly sharp – at exactly the point on the subject where I wanted the maximum sharpness. 3) The low light (no flash) capabilities of the camera has improved! I did a very informal test against a 5050 at default settings and the 1/10 sec of the 5060 compared favourably to the 1/25 sec shutter speed of the 5050. Although both were handheld shots the 5060 image was much sharper (no motion blur – almost as if a tripod was used!). I could have easily shot the 5060 at 1/25 or 1/50 and had an acceptable image after 30 seconds PS work on it. I’m very impressed! I find that in low-light no-flash shots I am usually setting a -.7 to -1.7 compensation on the camera (it just thinks it needs all that light!) so in effect the 5060’s have very similar effective performance to the much lauded 5050’s. Now I’m not putting the 5050 down this is just my opinion after playing with a 5050 for a few minutes… the 5060 is definitely an upgraded camera – except for raw write speeds of course. 4) The camera feels a little more responsive to me overall but it still is SLOW writing ORF files! I haven’t done the timings per instruction but it is in the about 8-9 second range with a Transcend 512MB 25x card – I also have an Olympus 512MB xD card – what a waste of money (I thought I was actually buying speed with an xD card)! I don’t normally use it but since I shoot ORF’s exclusively it is good to have an extra 512MB on the camera ready to shoot – even if it is much slower (I also have 6 512MB Transcend 25x cards and a few 340MB and 1GB Microdrives but of course I don’t always have everything with me so the second storage card slot (xD Slot) in the Olympus is a must-have in my next Pro camera). 5) I also did a couple of side by side test shots with an Olympus E1 – the images say it all! The E1’s colours are much more accurate out of the camera. ORF + Jpgs The E1’s noise is – what noise? 🙂 Jpgs only The E1 has just a touch more detail. Because of less noise? The E1 had a lens that cost 2 1/2 times what the 5060 + Tele-Converter lens cost me. OUCH! The Camedia software can read the E1’s ORF files! Camedia (or the Olympus plug-in for PS) converts very noisy ORF files for both cameras 🙁 PS Camera Raw can read the E1 ORF files and converts much better noise free images than Olympus‘ offerings. 🙂 PS Camera Raw really Really messes up diagonals in the image – (jaggies anyone?) 🙁 My conclusion? I think I’ll stick to Nikon digital pro equipment – at least for now Olympus has a long way to go to match the quality of my 5+ year old (technology-wise) Nikon D1. As to the 5060? I think I’m getting myself in trouble with the Nikon camp but the Olympus 5060 „system“ (camera accessories (flash tele & wide lenses) features and image quality) is currently above anything that anyone else was offering in November/December 2003 – Now in February 2004 I’m still very very happy with my purchase! Now I just have to get PS CS and get Adobe to recognize C5060wz ORF files – I’ll have a very cost effective ‚baby E1‘. I hope the above information is useful to the group“. Take care Sincerely George Sinesios President GSI International 1991 Inc. I have also noticed a slight improvement in the speed and consistency of the 5060’s focusing. In regards to the flash performance I have nothing to reliably measure the performance compared to the previous firmware version (mine was .76). It does seem maybe a tad brighter than before but not in the degree that George pointed out. This may be due to the fact that I use an FL-20 as opposed to an FL-50. If I use the FL-20 in Auto mode and camera in anything but „P“ mode the flash can wash out subjects if I am not careful. This was my experience before so I have not had to modify my methods very much. I am VERY happy with the performance of the FL-20 and the size can’t be beat! Not of big consequence but menu operations seem a bit quicker to me. Personally I am very happy that I flashed my camera. Beyond the improvements others and I reported there might have been some additional ones that are not readily apparent like image processing etc. Finally I heard the firmware has since been pulled from the Yahoo forum. Someone mentioned it was because of the face that Olympus did not want it redistributed. A shame but if they get a new and official release on their Web site that would be greatly appreciated. Firmware 76 I might – my focus seems to not want to work when I’m in Macro or SuperMacro mode. I can see the subject come into perfect focus when I’m in those modes – then it blows right past it to not focused – that is with either IESP or Spot too. Anyone know any reason why? Or could that be a firmware 76 issue? Firmware 80 OK – I did it – and am VERY glad I did. Now my focus problem in Macro is gone. Thanks to this new version – whew! Good luck to others who wish to do this. I recommend printing out the instructions with the pictures and don’t be alarmed towards the end when you it’ll say your old firmware version instead of version 80 like in their picture Mfg … posted via https://oly-e.de“ ——————————————————————————————————————————————
